Most adventurers belong to a faction, but it is not required. They all have a vested interest in events in the North. You will still find some nefarious swashbucklers at sea from time to time, no doubt, but take comfort in the fact that Rare is choosing not to inspire anymore pirate-on-pirate violence than we've already seen for the last few years since launch.There are 5 major factions in the North, and several smaller factions.
